Religion and ethics

NSW public schools offer special religious education and special education in ethics, delivered by approved providers wherever available.

During enrolment, you can choose a special religious education option for your child from the school’s available approved providers. You can withdraw your child from special religious education by selecting alternative meaningful activities, or special education in ethics if it’s available.

You can update your preference by writing to the school or through the online form available at participating schools.
Visit the department’s website for more information about religion and ethics.

SCRIPTURE AT CCWC: Special Religious Education (SRE), sometimes known as ‘Scripture’, is an integral and legislated part of the curriculum for students in NSW state schools. Representatives of approved religious groups have an opportunity to provide SRE in every government school in NSW.

In accordance with Department of Education policy, SRE classes are offered to students of Callaghan College Wallsend Campus for two periods per semester. The program at CCWC is not linked to any specific denomination but allows students the chance to discuss, question, think and ultimately make decisions for themselves regarding the Christian faith. It is provided by the Baptist Church of NSW and the coordinator at CCWC is Mr Lysander Lawrence. Information on the curriculum followed by the SRE group can be found at the following link

During the time that SRE classes are being held, students not attending will be located in a separate space and participate in meaningful activities, which could include reading, private study or completing homework. Currently there is no provision for Special Ethics Education (SEE) in secondary schools.

In accordance with Section 33 of the Education Act, no child is required to receive any general religious education or special religious education if the parents/caregivers object. You also have the right to ask that your child be withdrawn from SRE at any time. Should you prefer to withdraw your child from these classes, please fill in the online form (link below).

Please note: you may reverse your decision to withdraw your child from SRE at any time in writing, by letter or email to the Administration Office.
