What is the CAPA Program?
This program builds on the NSW Education Standard Authority (NESA) Dance, Drama, Visual Arts and Music syllabus content to enrich and challenge high performing Creative Arts students. The Program offers Year 7 students the opportunity for a combined performing arts experience designed to challenge and develop their current creative skills. In Years 8 to 10, through elective classes, students can focus more specifically on one or two areas.
CAPA Program students will have opportunities for public performance, mentoring, tutoring and access to support from Jesmond Senior Campus and the University of Newcastle.
In Term 1, CAPA Program students participate in a specialised CAPA Project where they are provided two dedicated hours each week to focus on their chosen discipline. Under the guidance of a specialist CAPA teacher, students work collaboratively, communicate with peers and challenge their skills through the creation of a performance or artwork.
In addition to this targeted project, classwork, programming and assessment in all subject areas, takes into consideration the students’ backgrounds, skills and talents. The experience offered to CAPA Program students is holistic and inclusive. While students in the CAPA program complete the same subjects as all other classes, the curriculum caters to a preferred learning style in all mandatory studies.
As part of their contribution to the CAPA program, students are encouraged to participate in a range of creative ensembles to further enhance and refine their skills. Opportunities available include the school concert band, vocal ensemble, drama ensemble, dance ensemble and enrichment art workshops.
The CCWC CAPA Program will further develop your child’s knowledge, skills and attitudes and enable them to reach their full artistic potential as well as fully achieving in their general education. It provides students with an opportunity to work collaboratively with like-minded students in a creative and supportive environment.
